Claude Monet’s “Impression, Sunrise” was the painting from which the entire Impressionist movement took its name. Much of this painting is obscured by mist, but what you can see is dominated by the vibrant red sun against the hazy grey sky. All three areas of the painting – water, reflections and smoke – blend together, with the horizon vanishing into the cloudy grey mist.
This painting has become a symbol of the Impressionist movement, not just because of the title, but because of the way that much of Monet’s later work seemed to develop from this painting. Most notable is how Monet captured the effect of changing light on this subject, something that would become more and more important to him over the years.
